The Adam and Eve account of Genesis 3 is the first epic story of love, intrigue, betrayal,  power and death in the bible. It is so well written and displayed such colour and effective use of figurative speech and of anthropomorphism that even today, many scholars are still baffled and at odds about its true meaning….if any.

By the way, have you ever wondered what was the forbidden fruit or if a snake can really talk? Can God really walk? Even more concerning, what is  meant by being “made in god’s image?

To refresh the memory, let’s revisit the Genesis 3 story. See picture and note that Adam was with Eve when she ate the forbidden fruit so the idea of infidelity is a bit stretched.

Genesis 3:1-6 NLT. At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.” (Genesis3:7)

Naturally, to think the forbidden fruit is an actual fruit is logical.  After all, the bible said so and many scholars and “Rabbinic commentators variously characterized the forbidden fruit as a fig, a pomegranate, a grape, an apricot, a citron, or even wheat. The importance and potency of these fruits can not be denied but none has been proven to have any real extra super natural power, that would give extra knowledge or result in death.

An apple a day keep the doctor away according to a popular proverb but reality is, there were no apples in bible time. Apple was also considered as the forbidden fruit simply because during translation, in Latin, the Hebrew word for evil is malus but in Latin,  malus also means apple. ”

This one is hilarious if not erotic and maybe sad. According to this line of reason, sex is the forbidden fruit. Adam and Eve were told not to have sex as the day they do so they would die. However the devil seduced Eve, in front of Adam, and had sex with her. Eve then went and shared the joys of sex with her hubby, Adam.

Interestingly, the Serpent seeddual seed or two-seedline controversial religious belief took it a bit further and claimed that the Eve/Serpent sexual intercourse resulted in the birth of Cain, hence Cain was illegitimate and a bastard if not a “jacket”. This is so despite Gen 4: 1And Adam had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man. ” she said.

These could be nice scenes in “Days of our Lives” or other soap opera but the reality is such philandering and adulterous behaviour would be appalling in the Genesis.

Also note that according to the bible, Adam was alone when the lord first forbade him to eat of the the fruit of knowledge of god and evil. Sex requires two people, at least and the forbidden fruit could be eaten by one person.

Most importantly, man was commanded to multiply. Its difficult to tell people to multiply and then forbid them to have sex. Genesis 1: 28.  And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it.

Critical, is the fact that sex cannot be forbidden as it is instinctual and occurs as if natural and without teaching or model.  Human beings were also made with sex organs that prompts them towards reproduction. Actually, maybe, the sole purpose for sex is to bring young ones as is obvious for all of creation with the exception of man and a few dolphin species. One can abstain from or restrict it, however

WOW.  Man does sex for recreation (fun) and stop its original intention of procreation (reproduction) by using their intellect to develop birth control methods such as “safe period”, condoms, pills, etc. An instance when the intellect can be contrary to nature and evil.

poster genesis 3 6 13

So, if it is not a real fruit nor sex, what was the forbidden fruit. Basically, thoughts are fruits. Your thoughts can conjure, plant and bear seeds and images that are literally out of this word. Your thoughts can let you become inquisitive and seek knowledge. Of course as individuals, it is okay to have thoughts but some thoughts are best left ALONE. Your deep rational thoughts that seek to reason, discern and determine time, things and events contrary to truth are forbidden fruits.

This simple and maybe naive view is that the forbidden fruit is “reason, thinking and freewill”. We have the capacity of intellect but we should not use it to pursue our vain ways. We should enjoy all our thoughts and the earth but no bother with inventions and intentions. Just as how insects, birds, animals and fish enjoy nature without trying to manipulate it needlessly. This reliance on nature or god was also expected of man.

Here is a superb example of the Lord being upset at reason and self determination. Remeber the creation of the tower of babel:

Genesis 11 . 1. Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. As people moved eastward,[a] they found a plain in Shinar[b] and settled there.

They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.

So reason and intellect without the Creator’s guidance is forbidden fruit and leads to death and confusion.

Another problem with reasoning is that sometimes the things that the mind perceives intellectually are not intelligent nor the “truth” or even necessarily in harmony with the natural design of nature.

poster proverbs 3 vs 18

This is so since man is intellectual but not intelligent. Intelligence is an individual’s ability to acquire skills and knowledge and apply them while intellect is the faculty of objectively understanding and reasoning abstract matters.

The amount of knowledge needed to make an intelligent and “good” decisions can only be done by an Omniscient, Omnipotent and Omnipresent being. Since man is far from being all knowing, all powerful and ever present, he is reduced to making intellectual decisions based on limited knowledge and eventually faulty reasoning. THIS IS DANGEROUS AND WILL RESULT IN DEATH.

poster genesis 3 22 - 24

In short, knowledge/reason is the tree of good and evil while wisdom is the tree of life. Although knowledge is good to have, wisdom which requires both understanding and knowledge is the greatest ideal and pursuit. The fruits of wisdom is better than the fruits of knowledge. One sustains while one kills. The problem is, one cannot gain wisdom without obedience and recognition of the order of life. Using time and effort to determine  and getting knowledge about life is a waste (death) as without understanding there can be no wisdom.

The idea that a snake spoke to Eve can be appreciated bearing in mind in the bible a donkey also spoke. Num:22:28: And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?

However, the bible uses figurative speech and anthropomorphism a lot. In this case it was both figurative and anthropomorphic. Your mind and thoughts are like subtle yet dangerous animals in your head. Eve did not see a snake but was simply thinking and reasoning with herself. This colourful expression underscore the fact that eve knew that she was wrong to disobey but justified in the possible favourable outcomes. In short, she  wondered and even wandered away from “being subservient and restricted to nature’s way”.

Jesus puts this thought process neatly in Matthew 10: 16 “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves. Be ye therefore wise as serpents and harmless as doves”.

poster gen-01-26

Philosophers and theologians have debated the exact meaning of the phrase for millennia. Many argued that being made in the Image of God does not mean that God possesses human-like features as God is a spirit. Rather that the statement is figurative language for God bestowing special honor unto humankind, which He did not confer unto the rest of Creation.

These include mind, will and emotion and consequently the ability to think, reason and free will.

Although it would feel special to think that the Creator has two arms, two eyes, two ears and a head, the reality is that animals also have the same features and they were made before mankind. According to the Bible and Science, man was the last of creation, hence man resembles monkey and monkey resembles god if we subscribe to the physical image scenario.

poster genesis 2

No doubt, we could argue that if man did not use up his intellect and try to control nature to his benefit life might be worse on earth. Man’s intellect created most of the food we now eat and taken for granted such as rice, corn, wheat, carrots, banana. Similarly without man’s reasoning and intellect there would be no factories, and internet, and cars etc.

Despite these achievements, the day we begin determining our destiny we start to die. Today, chronic diseases are a major public health problem worldwide. In 2005, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 61 per cent of all deaths — 35 million — and 49 per cent of the global burden of disease were attributable to chronic diseases due to life style. By 2030, the proportion of total global deaths due to chronic diseases is expected to increase to 70 per cent and the global burden of disease to 56 per cent. These deaths are simply because we use our intellect to reason and try to determine our life style.

Apart from life style diseases, many deaths are due to wars, ethnic cleansing, ill effects of technology, GMO related health problems. flooding, Electricity and gas related deaths etc. The reality is that hunger and poverty are a result of man’s reasoning and intellect. Religion was created by the Sumerians due to their reasoning and use of knowledge of the stars and astrology.

poster prov 3 vs 6

So that is the problem. A jealous omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent creator which made man in its image and likeness of intelligence and free will YET still insisted and required man to not use this free will and intellect for self determination, as the day man doeth such, man dies.

Ever wondered why we have birthday celebrations or it is too obvious? Rhetorical? Ok, true. One’s date of birth is very important for one simple fact. If there was no birth date, there would be no you. Of course, your birth date is also important as it marks your beginning, genesis or start of life on earth. It can be a pleasant fuzzy feeling of emotions when we are given gifts on our birthdays. On the other hand, if we are not “fussed” over during our birthdays we may feel neglected and unimportant.

This is the key behind birthday celebrations and astrology. This basic concept was originally used for gods, in an attempt to appeased them so they could  make life better for us here on earth. If we give gifts on a birthday the god will be happy and sees us in a favourable light. The reverse is true. No gifts and the god makes our lives miserable.

Birthday celebrations were only for gods initially. It was eventually extended to kings who claimed divine rule on behalf of the gods. As such, normal ordinary people could not celebrate birth dates.

It was the Romans who made the idea of birthdays for ordinary folks popular. However, only men experienced this birthday celebration at first. Female birthdays were not celebrated until about the 12th century. Regular Roman citizens were then allowed to  celebrate the birthdays of their friends and family members. The government, however, created public holidays in honor of more famous citizens.

Birthdays didn’t begin until calendars were created more than 4000 years before Christ by the Sumerians in Mesopotamia.  Calendars were used to record, monitor and predict the influence of the Sun, moon and stars on life on earth. As ancient people began taking note of the moon’s cycles, they began paying attention to the change in seasons as well. They also noticed this pattern repeated itself, so they began marking these changes in time.

poster solstice-and-equinoxNotably, they believed that the year began at the Spring Equinox (Eq-ui equal, nox – nights), circa March 21, when there is equal number of hours of daylight (12) and hours of darkness (12). They also noticed that the hours of sunlight increased or lengthened from 12 hours on March 21 (Spring Equinox) by about 2 minutes each day, reaching the its longest at the Summer Solstice, June 21 up to 15 hours or more, as the sun moved southerly across the earth.  The Sun is King, and light prevails.

However, after June 21, the hours of sunlight gradually reduced or shortened by about 2 minutes per day until it is again the same number of hours of light and darkness (12 hours at the Autumn Equinox (Eq-ui equal, nox – nights), circa September 22. The hours of light still continue to shorten until it is at its lowest point circa December 22, the Winter Solstice.

A remarkable thing happens at this period when the hours of sunlight is at its lowest. The hours of sunlight stop reducing and seem to stand still for three days, December 22 – 25. Hence the name Winter Solstice, the Latin sol (“sun”) and sistere (“to stand still”). This mean that the hours of sunlight do not shortened nor lengthened for three days. The sun has died.

Another remarkable feat then occurred at December 25. At the end of these three days, on December 25, the sun seems to “reverse “change direction from a southerly movement to a northerly movement and the hours of sunshine began to lengthen once more. This new lengthening of the sun was so gladly welcomed by ancient agriculture-based civilizations that it was worshiped and celebrated. Indeed, it was believed that the sun was born on this day. It is one of if not the first birthday celebration.   Maybe the Spring Equinox and beginning of the year (March 21) Ishtar’s (Easter’s) or Venus’s birthday occurred before.

Basically, most of these birthday god celebrations involved a surrogate king and an effigy of the god of darkness being burnt (sacrificed to the sun-god) in a huge bonfire. Recitals of their creation myth is done followed by military exercises symbolizing the great battle that was going on between the sun and the forces of darkness. After the bonfire, the people exchanged gifts, held feasts, and visited friends and relatives.

Indeed, in many civilizations, the major gods such as An, Marduk, Osiris, Horus, Isis, Mithras, Saturn, Sol, and Apollo celebrated their birthdays on December 25. SEE MY BLOG ON DECEMBER 22 for more information on the death and birth of the invincible son

poster zodiacAs mentioned, thanks to the Sumerians, this mystery and awe was explained and manipulated via astrology, which they invented.  They named many of the constellations and defined the nature of numerous bodies in the solar system. They created a calendar that divided a year into 12 lunar months of 29 or 30 days. Each month began with the sighting of a new moon. Indeed, the Sumerians taught the Babylonians astrology. Ptolemy and others then learned from the Babylonians. The rest of the world learned from them.

The Greek astronomer Ptolemy rationalized that the zodiac predicts the path our lives will take in. With this knowledge he made 12 astrological signs; Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricornus, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, and Leo. He called these predictions horoscopes which means “hour of birth.”

The Bible does not support or mandate the worshiping or celebration of anyone’s birth. Indeed, the three instances of birthday celebrations in the Bible had to do with unrighteousness and it was  done by two evil Kings (Pharaoh – Genesis 40:20 and Herod- Matthew 14: 6. ) and by Job’s sons – Job 1:4, who were following evil strange religions. In all three occasions, the events and celebrations were ignoble from a biblical perspective.

poster deuteronomy 18 vs 10

On the note of astrology which bears birthdays (horrorscope, oops typo, horoscope) , there are many instances of the bible frowning at astrology. These include Leviticus 19:26-28; Leviticus 20:27, Deuteronomy 18: 10 – 14 and 2 Kings 21: 6

(Does this mean that horoscope, palm reading, obeah, Christmas and Easter celebrations, etc are evil?)

Poster Constantine-The-Great-The-First-Christian-Emperor-2 Constantine, Emperor of Rome, worshipped the pantheon of Roman gods as all his predecessors had done and especially the Roman sun god, Sol. However, history has it that as he was traveling to battle his most powerful rival in Italy, Maxentius, at the Tiber River in A.D. 312, he had a vision. In that vision, he reported seeing the cross of Christ superimposed on the sun with the words, in hoc signo vinces – “in this sign you shall conquer.” After winning the battle, he became a strong champion of Christianity.

Either as a means to unify his empire, or to make converting to Christianity easier, Constantine sought to blend Christian and pagan traditions. At that time, two prominent pagan winter festivals were celebrated. The first, starting on December 17 and lasting seven days, honored Saturn, the Roman god of agriculture. The second, starting on December 25 and lasting through January 1, commemorated the birth of Mithras, the Persian god of light. Constantine merged many of the traditions from these festivals with the Nativity story in the Bible and Christmas was born.

From its beginning, Christmas was a holiday (or holy day), gifts were exchanged, families and friends gathered to feast, and a birth was celebrated; just like in the Roman and Persian festivities.

During the Silly Season of December 22 – 25, remember the reason for the season. It is in recognition of the birthday of the mythical Sun god,  Sol Invictus (Invincible Sun).  The presents and gift giving as well as revelry, commerce and piety are all done in pursuit and recognition of what was seen as detestable from a biblical perspective.

The bad of birthday celebrations  and the evil that results This is easily seen since, the Creator God mentioned in the bible is a jealous, bias, prejudice ONE, insisting that mankind had no other god before him as noted in Exodus 20: 1- 6.poster exodus 20 1 commandments

Of course, we could justify our participation in Christmas by saying it is really Christ that is the reason for the season and we are celebrating the birthday of the son of God, Jesus Christ. The fact that the Winter Solstice December 22 – 25 was worshiped as a pagan and animistic religion as part of astrology years before Christ was born would belittle such justification since our actions should favour righteousness and not darkness.

Remember too, if a whore house by the name of Madame’s Parlour continues offering prostitution services but decided to rebrand and reposition itself as Venus Leisure Centre , that does not makes it legal or moral. A whorehouse by any name is still a whorehouse… I mean, a rose by any name is still a rose.

Child of a lesser God

Last week I had a very serious conversation with Myself and Me. It was quite revealing too. We realized it has been quite a while since all three of us spoke. As we sat and chatted the topic of  “Am I a child of a lesser god” came up.  You see, I use to wonder if god had something against Blacks or is on the other race’s side. It didn’t bother Me much but Myself was also worried at times and yet somehow, over all these years, we have never resolved the issue.

Even though I recalled the song from Sunday School,  “Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world. Red and Yellow, Black and White, all are special in his sight. Jesus loves the children of the world”, I had to ask Me and Myself,  if Jesus was really coloured blind or supporting the status quo.   The reality is that I grew up in Jamaica, where more than 90% of the population were Blacks, of charred skin and high melanin yet their lot in life was appalling compared to the minority, Reds, Whites, Yellows and Mixed which were 1.3 percent East Indian, 0.2 percent white, 0.2 percent Chinese and 7.3 percent mixed ethnicity respectively.

Sadly, people like Me felt that it was the Blacks’ fault why they were living in squalor because they did not develop themselves. Me also pointed out that Blacks patronize non Black businesses and this further cause deterioration of Black communities and lives. At first glance, I could say that this is true as many Blacks were tending non Blacks’ gardens while their own gardens were all over grown in weeds.

Wondering why my dream never came through, Please tell me what to do. Something is holding me back, Is it because I am Black.  CLICK to watch the 1960’s SYL JOHNSON “Is it because I am Black” Anthem

However, I could also note the foolishness of comparing the development of Blacks in the West with that of their non Blacks counterpart. No White, Red or Yellow skin person was subjected to slavery in Jamaica. They know nothing of being homeless, mass raped, robbed, kidnapped and killed in this little island of 144,000 square miles. Non blacks don’t spend their waking hours worrying about discrimination, prejudice, persecution, and victimization based on colour of skin. They actually spent their entire lives coming up with craft and laws to keep Blacks “in place”.

Indeed, Whites, Indians, and Chinese came to Jamaica as conquerors (invaders), apprenticeships and indentured servants with assets and most importantly being, Free. They didn’t start the race after the other runners were all gone.

For support, Myself added the glaring fact that Blacks came to Jamaica with nothing, in shackles and chains and against their will. All they had was their souls and that too was soon taken away.  If they managed to start businesses their prices and offerings were not as cheap or competitive as the non Blacks who had a stronger product network and worth. Me, was not amused and sarcastically asked, “How did it happen that Blacks were slaves and now at the bottom of the echelon of the society”.

Racial exploitation requires “tricks in trade and mischievous in business”. You see, in order to build a family, village, or nation, our devious  forefathers used myths, legends, religion and craft as a cohesive measure. Adolph Hitler knew this well and between 1933 to 1945, he built Nazism on the premise of a god who is racist and not coloured blind. Hitler created a myth that God selected the Aryan race (a type of European white) to be master over all races and to rule the earth. He believed that people of my skin hue were mere ” hewers of wood and drawers of water”. Of course that was a terrifying thought among Blacks and other non whites. It was actually horrifying from a Jamaican perspective, bearing in mind Jamaica is “land of wood and water” and this was the 1930’s when Jamaicans were barely adjusting to being free from slavery. A time when Marcus Garvey was alive and  trying to teach Blacks that their ancestors were great and they can be great again.

Hitlposter 1 commandmenter’s hatred and subjugation of non whites were not novel despite being “cruel”. For example, the Pentateuch (first five books of the Old Testament), also taught a similar racist philosophy. The Bible purported that Abraham, because of his faith and monotheistic (one god) view, earned himself a special favour with God. As such, through his off springs, Isaac and Jacob and the twelve tribes of Israel, the God of Abraham would make Abraham’s seeds masters of the earth. A super lineage.

poster bible

Similar to Hitler, seemingly, the Old Testament preached ethnic cleansing,  genocide and xenophobia.

The need to destroy foreign nations and peoples was justified on the notion that these nations (Gentiles) were dogs depraved beyond redemption, (Psalms 106: 32 – 36; Gen. 15:16; Lev. 18:21-30; 20:2-5; etc.). According to the Old Testament, non Israelite in the land widely practiced child sacrifice, incest, homosexuality, bestiality, idolatry and other despicable behaviors worthy of death. Recall Sodom and Gomorrah.

This cleansing or killing of gentiles was recommended by God as noted by Isaiah 40: 17 – “All the Gentiles are as nothing before him, and they are counted to him as vanity and as less than nothing”. This destroying or reducing of a people’s psyche to nothing provides consensual exploitation and creation of ghettos. Hitler’s Nazism was built on similar concepts and this was how a race or peoples is degraded and made children of lesser gods worthy for subjugation.

Hitler’s low status of non whites and the idea of whites being powerful and the masters of the earth struck the world with a fear that saw many countries “ganging” up (allies) against Hitler and eventually defeating him and Nazism in 1945. The sad part about this is that many Jamaicans fought and died in World War 11 to topple Nazism yet the ugly head of Nazism has been embedded in Jamaican society for more than 400 years before Nazism.  Racial enslavement, prejudice and discrimination.

Since 1502, with the creation of the first Spanish Garrison (town) in Sevilla Nueva (St. Ann’s Bay), the whites (minority) had established an institution and culture of race superiority and enslavement of the non whites (majority) in Jamaica with the aid of a god. According to the Spaniards, the native Amerindians could not stand up to the level of “cruelty” required to run their plantation economy of cane and tobacco, and Blacks were touted as ideal replacements. Hence the pitiful lot of Blacks in Jamaica as slaves and children of lesser gods was begun and perpetuated.

poster marcus white manThis 400 years of slavery, created a breed of Jamaican Blacks who mimic their white slave owners’ and master’s behaviour and value scheme. These new Blacks did everything in their power to distance themselves from their black skin hue. In Jamaica, we have Blacks telling Blacks that they are “black and ugly”. Beauty is based on Caucasian looks and features. The women are ashamed of their own hair and spend millions of dollars and hours getting their kinky hair “unkinked”. They buy wigs made in the “image and likeness” of other peoples and nations and despite their black skin their minds are “whiter than the Queen of England’ who is the Head of State of Jamaica. On the matter of skin, the men and women cursed their creator and hated their parents blackness so much that they use chemicals on their skins to bleach their blackness to white. These pitiful white washed Black Jamaicans should be pitied instead of ridiculed as the system does teach : “If you are White it is all right; if you are Brown you can stick around but if you are Black you got to get back or get on the attack”. Undoubtedly, lighter skin colour enhanced status quo and economic mobility in Jamaica.

This blaring yet subtle form of racism is ingrained in the average Jamaican’s mind and the slavery mentality wreaked havoc with the dignity and royalty of being Black. The island is a land of few plantations, numerous church properties, countless hair parlours, pharmacies and bars  and many ghettos.  Of course many Black Jamaicans would let you know that they live in modern houses with amenities but this is another way of consoling themselves that they are more privileged ghetto folks. Interestingly,  a ghetto is a part of a city in which members of a minority group live due to oppression as a result of social, legal, or economic pressure. In Jamaica, the oppressed group is the majority, Blacks, but the same concept of ghetto abounds.

Thanks to the works of Marcus Mosiah Garvey (1887 – 1940) and the Rastafarian (1930 – 1990), the Jamaican Black psyche was positively influenced. These two institutions tried to build Black pride and develop respect and care among Blacks. Albeit, though by different avenues, both tried to get Blacks to appreciate their black skins not as shame but as royalty.

Marcus tried a political and commercial solution by forming the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), African Communities League (ACL), the Black Starline and the People’s Political Party (PPP). He taught the importance of the mental and economical development of Blacks. Education was considered super important and Blacks were encouraged to  start their own businesses. His rallying call was “Be Black, Buy Black and think Black”. He envisioned repatriation, a back to Africa movement for Blacks home and abroad. Unfortunately, Africa was not ready for Western Blacks; white washed Black men felt his message was a bit too “black” and the USA and Europe were worried at his political ambitions.  In short he was rejected by African countries, betrayed by white washed Black men and imprisoned and deported by the USA.  For the records, he was not welcomed back to Jamaica by the establishment in 1927 after being deported from the USA. He died in England in June 1940.

However, Marcus Garvey’s work impacted several Jamaicans and some heeded his message warnings and prophecies. Indeed, according to Marcus Garvey, “In life I shall be the flame but in death I shall be a terror to the foes of African liberty”. He influenced many African nations, Black Power movements and most importantly the Rastafarian movement.

The Rastafarians further developed Marcus Garvey’s back to Africa movement and went a step further by deifying Haile Selassie, emperor of Ethiopia, whose coronation in 1930 was believed to be prophesied by Marcus Garvey.  Unlike Marcus, the Rastafarians used a religious attempt to reject the racism of Jamaica. They not only taught Black pride but they also adopted African values, vegetarian life style and condemned Christianity as the religion of the Whites.

Peter Tosh used reggae music to spread the new black pride that Rastafari afforded  Jamaicans. In this song “Mama Africa” you can feel the loss Peter is expressing as he wailed and bemoaned the ripping apart of Blacks from Africa. CLICK TO LISTEN ON YOUTUBE

The Rastafarians agreed with Marcus that ” if Negroes are black and was made in the image of god, then somehow, god must be black”. As such, they decided to look at god from the spectacles of Africans. Ethiopia was emulated.

Reggae music became an effective medium to express the challenges of Blacks. Artistes such as Peter Tosh, created music that was revolutionary and commanding in nature. He liked to humourously point out the negative words in our vernacular associated with black: Black sheep, black list, black as sin and black heart, etc. Indeed, the main time black is positive is in accounts: to be in the black is to be making profits. In the red is a loss.

As with Marcus, the Rastafarians declined due to the stifling nature of racism, but was still relevant in fostering black consciousness and pride among Blacks. With due respect, Marcus Garvey, Rastafarian and Reggae Music have influenced all races.

Does god have a gender, colour or race? CLICK HERE TO READ MY BLOG ON GOD’S GENDER . It is taken for granted that in the beginning god made man in his own image and likeness. This image and likeness could never be physical traits such as gender, race and colour since God is a spirit and is formless and colourless. Of course, not taken for granted, at times, is the fact that man in turn, made his own god (s) in his own image and likeness. Anthropomorphism was used to bring man’s created gods to life.  As a result, of course, the most powerful man would have the most powerful god and in his colour. Since, history  is not recorded from a victim’s point of view but from the victor’s or conqueror’s point of view, in Jamaica, god is a male, white, blue eyed and straight nosed, reflecting the god of the slave master. Most pictures of Jesus depicted a Caucasian.

Although, Marcus Garvey knew that the creator has no colour, he believed that Blacks (slaves) should have a black god who had their interest in mind since other races did same. Adopting the god of another race that was biased or prejudiced  to one’s race was an inferior complex worthy of subjugation according to Marcus.

The notion of individual gods for races is divisive and the brotherhood of man is the loser. Since equality is impossible, it would mean that one god would be greater than the others. Also, of course, common sense would indicate that “nothing that is created should be the creator” and there is only one creator. Many gods but one creator.

poster marcus leaderIndeed, man in his attempt to create his own god had ignored the Creator, the Omniscient, Omnipresent and Omnipotent one. Man in his attempt to control his environment has created religions, laws and customs to establish race, class and creed for ruling and enslavement purposes. Therefore, since gods are man’s creation, god is not the problem. There is no lesser or greater god. Man is the problem.

Indeed, the racism of the Old Testament, and its folly were made bare by Jesus Christ who eventually rejected many of the tenets of Judaism that he learnt as a child. Vengeance was replaced with forgiveness, hatred with love and bias with open arms. Simultaneously Jesus also realized that there were some non Jews who had better morals and virtues than were some Jews.

It actually, took a Canaanite woman (Gentile) to change Jesus from his racist Judaic ways to a more open embracing way. The Canaanite lady (a non Jew) wanted Jesus yo heal her very sick daughter and had cried to Christ for help. Christ, (being a true Jew) shew his racist views and told the lady that he came for the Jews (the chosen ones) and not for Gentiles (dogs).

Matthew 15: 21 – 28. And Jesus said, “It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” The Canaanite woman would have no such nonsense and correctly told Christ:  “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.”  It was eureka moment for Christ and he immediately realized his error and decided to help the dog,  and said “Woman, great is your faith!”.

It seemed, this encounter between lion and dog changed history and fulfilled Christ’s purpose on Earth. It opened a door for Christ to extend his mercies beyond Israel. It made Christ realized that there were wicked Jews who do not do the will of the Lord, and there were non Jews who do the will of the Lord. Christ shared his new found revelations with the parable of the Good Samaritan.

Luke 10: 29 -37. Jesus told a story of how a man (Jew) was robbed but two of his fellow Jews did nothing to help. How ever a non Jew (Samaritan) helped. Jesus then asked “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”  The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”  Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” Everyone is his brother’s keeper.

As seen, even though the Old Testament touted racism, genocide and ethnic cleansing, Jesus Christ dismissed them as old wine  that can no longer provide pathways to righteousness or happiness. In Matthew 12 vs 50, Christ noted: “For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” Indeed, John 10 vs 16 explained it further with Christ saying: “And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. Seems there are good people in every race.

As such, the idea of greater and lesser gods is really a figment of the imagination, albeit diabolic and divisive. It is merely man’s attempt to prove who has the better imaginary friend and provider at the expense of another man. There is only one Creator and one people. Gods are unnecessary.

For fun, let’s take a spin on the human race idea in the form of an Olympic race. Imagine, it is the day of the race and the world awaits the running of the biggest event on the International stage. One could sense the various tensions abounding. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat hovered in the air over the different races. Adrenaline and testosterone flowed as the competitors got ready for the great race, dubbed, the Human Race. At stake is the reputation and title of which race is superior and best skin of the world.

Three competitors representing the three major power houses of race distinctions: Caucasian (whites), Mongoloid (Chinese and Indians) and Negroid ( Blacks).

As the announcer introduced the runners  one could sense the electrifying vibration that unified the mass while surreptitiously enforcing the division of humans. First to be announced were the Caucasians. The Caucasian trotted unto the race track as favourite. His running gear was of high quality. Spikes and arm band were brand named items. As he took off his sweat shirt and pants, his biceps and triceps as well as legs and thighs bulged and shew the benefits of training and exercising with the best equipment and food.

Second to be introduced was the Mongoloid. The Mongoloid ran unto the track and did a double somersault to the amusement of the crowd. The crowd erupted as he did several push ups as part of his limbering routine. His gear reflected state of the art designs and style. His red and yellow track shoes were eye dazzling: made in China of course.

poster marcus confidenceAs they announced the Negro, it dawned on everyone that the Negro was not at the starting blocks. The Negro was still in the dressing room, unsure of what to do next. His sporting gear was his black skin, his arm band was the scars from his chains and bangles and his spikes were his hardened foot sole. His arms were strong, not from exercise but from hours of plantation work. As he approached the starting blocks, the crowd jeered at his nakedness and sad lot in life.

As he entered the field but before he could reach his blocks, he heard the starter’s gun went off. Imagine, the human race had begun without the black man being in his starting blocks. He looked to the heaven in disbelief but there was only blue sky. He looked at the starter, who smiled and said, “Hurry up, Run on, join the race”.  He looked at himself and smiled as he heard a small quiet inner voice saying, “Run not, do stay. They are going in the wrong direction, anyway”.

Despite the Old Testament and Hitler’s Nazism supporting the idea of a greater god and superiority of race and skin colour, common sense teaches that such notion is a result of greed, power grabs, narcissism and schizophrenic tendency. Naturally, man’s created god would take his own skin colour and all other colours would be deficient. Hence, the lot and position of Blacks in Jamaica is not a lesser or greater god situation, but just sheer racial skin colour hegemony started by Europeans and perpetuated by “white washed Black Jamaicans”.

poster marcus the-man-who-is-not-ablee-to-develop-and-use-25279867Indeed, god is a title and anything can be god., even your car. As Peter Tosh once said, god is dog spelt back way.  So what is important is the Creator of the heavens, earth and its fullness and that is not god. The Creator is an omnipresent, omnipotent and omnipresent thing that makes everything that became gods. .

Enslavement and poverty of one race, class or creed to the detriment of another is cruel and is backward thinking. Using god or skin to justify the subjugation of peoples is merely “tricks in trade and mischievous in business. Truth is, there are some evil people in every race, class or creed.  Truth is, instances can be found of Whites enslaving Whites and Blacks enslaving  Blacks.

Being subjected to prejudice, squalor and ghettos is not the works or neglect of an inferior god. It is not instances of god being asleep and not paying attention. Maybe, as a famous radio host once said, “God gave man intelligence and allowed man to run his own affairs. God in the mean time is busy dealing with the other planets in the universe”.

Our lot in life is a result of the lack of brotherly love, within races and among races. It is simply a reflection of the greed and power struggles of humans. It is a constant struggle between the oppressed and the oppressor with the roles changing.  Interestingly, as scripted, any attempt to control earth without respecting the order of the Creator and creation will result in the captivity of both the captives and the captors as well as the enslavement of both the one doing the enslaving and the one being enslaved.

There are two days in the year when the earth, sun, moon and Venus are so aligned that there are equal hours of daylight and night on earth. Twelve hours of sunlight and twelve hours of darkness. Wow. These two occurrences actually do wonders to life on earth. It either renews and allow rebirth to life or it withers and kills life.

These two remarkable times on earth are called equinoxes. They occur at the beginning of Spring, (March 20 this year) and Autumn, September 23. They are called the Spring and Autumn Equinox respectively. In the southern hemisphere, the reverse is true. They have Autumn in March and Spring is in September.

Of the two, for obvious reasons, mankind loved and looked forward to Spring as a child looked forward to the return of its parents.  Spring, just like a parent, provided and promised sunshine, hope, protection, growth, care and the fostering of a positive outlook on life. On the other hand, Autumn signaled the return of darkness, gloom, bare trees and cold days. Which child would not want to encourage such a parent as Spring to continue being motherly. The encouragement of Spring to fecundate earth is Easter.

Undeniably, even today, most people look forward to Spring time than to Winter time. For the fun of it, imagine Winter for 12 months every year and no Spring or Summer. Scary eh? Well, early men did not leave things up to chance. They needed to ensure that Spring turned up every year and if encouraging or bribing it would help…so be it.

EasterIndeed that was exactly what happened more than 5000 years before Christ, in Mesopotamia. Man tried to bribe nature and created a cult by deifying the Spring Equinox. At first she was called Inanna by the Sumerians, but the Assyro-Babylonian Ishtarte, the Northwest Semetic goddess Astarte,  the Sidonians Ashtoreth, the  Greek  Aphrodite,   Roman Venus or Athena, Egyptian Isis or Hathor, Etruscan Turan, the German (Eostre) and Anglo Saxons (Easter) are all offshoots.

Easter is the “Queen of Heaven”. She is seen as the goddess of fertility, love, protection, fate, sex, childbirth and marriage. Easter was linked to Venus the brightest object in the night sky. She was also said to be Semiramis, wife of Nimrod.

Arguably, Easter is the most important mother goddess of Mesopotamia relics, alive and flourishing today. Since Easter is a Spring and full moon festivity, it is observed on the first Sunday after the full moon after the Spring Equinox. It can fall as early as March 22 or as late as April 25.

Traditionally, the rites and rituals surrounding Easter range from fun games to gory. In instances cakes or buns were baked for the Queen’s birthday and there are stories of virgin girls being impregnated in order for the baby to born in December near the Winter Solstice. In March of the following year, these three month old babies were sacrificed to Easter to help ensure that Spring would be bountiful. Some common symbols, associated with Easter and embodying fertility and piety are hot cross buns, Easter eggs. Easter Bunny, ashes, Sunday church at the rising sun of Spring after the full moon,  lighting of candles etc.  (See my blong on Easter/Ishtar for more details)

Up to 300 years after the death of Christ, “Followers of Christ”, shunned the Church as the Church was hunting them down to kill them. The disciples and “Followers of Christ”, also chose to recognize the death of Christ on the date it occurred: the Jewish Passover, which fell around day 14 of the month of Nisan, (March or April), and could be any day of the week.

However, the Catholic Church along with Constantine the emperor of Rome, decided in AD 325, at the council of Nicea, that  such practice should stop and the “new” Christians would instead make the commemoration of Christ’s death coincide with Easter, the Sunday after the Spring Equinox and full moon. One umbrella for Christ and paganism. This umbrella was given the name Christianity.

Although Easter was a pagan and satanic worship, the Nicean council decided that they would surreptitiously claim that Christ was killed on a Friday and raised on a Sunday, in order to maintain their Friday worship of fish eating to Dagon and their Sunday Spring Equinox worship for Easter. This would have been quite genius but for one small detail.

poster easter constantineConstantine had been oblivious of the prophecy that Christ must be dead for three days and three nights”.  Count and see if you can get three days and three nights from Friday night to Sunday morning. Doesn’t fit eh? Even if you not the brightest kid in kindergarten.   Of course, Christianity cannot explain this blunder logically  so they do it in “faith and belief”. In English, it is called Fiction and Fallacy. In the streets, it is called a Lie.

The truth is, Christ was crucified at Wednesday midday and died by 3 pm same day. He rose three days later on the Saturday evening around 6 pm. Count and see if you get three days and three nights. Good, it is something any kindergarten kid can do.

How can we safely say Christ was crucified on a Wednesday when the Bible said he was killed the day before the Sabbath. Isn’t the Sabbath a Saturday? Yup, the weekly Sabbath is Saturday but Christ was killed at a High Sabbath or annual Sabbath which fell on Nissan 15 every year. It was a Thursday that year

SabbathIt is a date not a day and can take place on any of the 7 days of the week. This High Sabbath is held to commemorate the exodus of the Israelite from Egypt. Recall the Passover and the killing of the first born of Egypt as we learnt in Sunday School. That was when the Passover Sabbath was created. It must not be confused with the regular weekly Saturday or 7th day Sabbath which was created from in Genesis. Thus each year, a week in March or April has 2 Sabbaths.

For proof of Christ’s death day, let us take a keen note of the first 4 gospels of the New Testament.  You will see the subtlety. A chronological journey with Christ from Palm Sunday when he rode into Jerusalem on an ass until he rose from the dead Saturday evening should makes things a bit clearer than mud…hopefully.

DAY/TIME EVENTS Days/night of death
“Palm”  Sunday
  • Christ rode into Jerusalem town on an ass
  • Went into the temple and whipped the money exchangers and turn over their tables. Felony?
  • Called the temple a “den of robbers and thieves”. (Slander?)
  • He healed some sick people and then spent the night in Bethany. (altruist?)  Matthew 21:1-16
  • Spent his time preaching in the temple
  • Spoke parables such as the wicked tenants,
  • Discussed his views on the right to pay taxes
  • Declared that the greatest commandment is that we should love the Lord thy god with all our heart, soul and mind.
  • Curse out the Pharisees.
  • Upon leaving the temple he told the parable of the 10 virgins.
  • Judas went to the authorities. Matthew 21:23-27
  • No teaching
  • Back to Jerusalem Matthew 26:17-19
  • Passover meal in the evening, at about 6 pm in Jerusalem.
  • Exposed Judas.
  • After the meal they went to the garden of Gethsemane
  • arrested and brought before the Jews later in the night. Matthew 26:47-56
  • Tried and whipped early morning, 9 am Matthew 27:2-50
  • Crucified at midday
  • Dead at 3 pm
  • removed from the cross, wrapped in linen and placed in a tomb before 6 pm.
  • No time to prepare his body for burial as they had to prepare for the Annual Sabbath in a few hours.
  • Annual High Sabbath (Feast of unleavened bread) begun at 6 pm.
First night (6 pm – 6 am)
  • Christ is already dead. Luke 23:43-46
  • Annual High Sabbath (Feast of unleavened bread) continued.
  • High Sabbath ends 6 pm
First day (6 am to 6 pm)Second night (6 pm – 6 am)
“Good” Friday
  • Christ is already dead
  • After the end of the High sabbath Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, that they might come and anoint the dead. Mark 16:1
  • Spices were prepared in the day on Friday but they had to stop for the Saturday Sabbath was approaching. They intended to come back first thing Sunday morning to anoint the body.
  • The women rested on the Saturday Sabbath day (starting from 6 pm Friday evening). Luke 23:55 – 24:1
Second day (6 am to 6 pm)

Third night (6 pm – 6 am)

  • Christ is already dead, in the morning
  • Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James continue resting during the Saturday Sabbath until it ended on  Saturday evening at 6 pm)
  • Christ risen around 6 pm, Saturday evening.
  • Sunday begins at 6 pm.
Third day (6 am to 6 pm)
  • Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James visit Jesus tomb on the Sunday, first day of the week. 6 am. Matthew 28:1-10
  • Christ already risen from Saturday (6 pm)

Since we are on the topic of Bible, let us use this opportunity to further debunk the idea that Easter is being worshiped to recognized Christ’s death. If Christ is in the New Testament and Easter is mentioned in the Old testament, it would mean that Easter existed before Christ. Here are some verses to consider. Get your Bible.

2 Kings 23:13 And the high places that were before Jerusalem, which were on the right hand of the mount of corruption, which Solomon the king of Israel had builded for  Ashtoreth   the abomination of the Zidonians, and for Chemosh the abomination of the Moabites, and for Milcom the abomination of the children of Ammon, did the king defile.

1 Kings 11:5-6. He followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molech the detestable god of the Ammonites.  So Solomon did evil in the eyes of Yahweh; he did not follow Yahweh completely, as David his father had done.

1 Kings 11:33. I will do this (split the nation) because they have forsaken me and worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians…

(1 Samuel 7:3,4). So the people of Israel removed the Baals and images of Ashtoreth. They served only Yahuwah.

The women were engaged in kneading dough and baking cakes of bread for the “Queen of Heaven” (Jeremiah 7:18).

Jeremiah 44: 15-18 stated that the people actually believed that because they stopped worshiping Easter or the Queen of Heaven they were suffering. Jeremiah think contrary. It was the worshiping of Easter that caused the calamity.

How do we start? With an answer and then explanation? Okay. Easter is both Idolatry and Christianity. Don’t get offended yet. Hush, if it hurts but logic would suggest that if Easter was started 7000 thousand years ago by men who created god to represent nature, Spring Equinox and Venus, , then it is a cult and idolatry by definition. However, 300 years after the death of Christ, at the AD 326 Council of Nicaea, the most noble and greatest of emperors of Rome, and arguably, of the world, declared that Easter would no longer be for Romans/pagans only but would also double up as recognition of Christ who he claimed was  “fully human and fully divine.”

This whitewashed version of paganism, now called Christianity, heralded in a  perpetuation of ungodly and dark mysteries by surreptitiously marrying paganism such as the Spring Equinox (March 20) and the Winter Solstice ( December 22) with Christ name only. This move is akin to re-branding a whore house as a leisure lounge. New name. Same evil deeds.

Click here to read more about the birthday of the Unconquerable SUN

poster easterEaster was “painted’ and “sold” as Christ’s resurrection day (rebirth) and December 22 was called Christmas, even though it was previously known as the birth day of the SUN…not son. At December 22, a remarkable thing happens. Days of sunlight reached its shortest and  then the start to get longer. A Birthday of the SUN.  Sunday, which was holy for the worship of the SUN also became the Lord’s Day instead of Saturday as mandated by Exodus 20 vs 8 – 10 (KJV): Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God:

These “new” converts or subscribers to the new religious order was called Christians. By re-branding the mystery cults and religion as Christianity, Constantine managed to keep the religious order in tact while avoiding a civil unrest among the population. Interestingly, Constantine became one of the first Christians, if not the first. The fox was now in charge of the chicken coop. Diabolic or genius or diabolically genius? Such was the greatness of Constantine.

Constantine was not finished yet. At the same meeting , the council also resolved that Easter should be fixed on a Sunday, not on the Wednesday or on Nisan 14, the day Christ died and as was practiced by the early “followers of Christ. As a result, Easter is now celebrated on the first Sunday after the full moon of the vernal equinox.

(To read more about the Unconquerable SUN, the shortest day in the year and the Winter Solstice, check my blog)

(Never ever forget that according to the New Testament, it was the church, led by Caiaphas,  the high priest and Pilate, the Roman procurator of Judea, that killed Christ). The church and the state.

With that in mind, it is crucial; that we reinforce the distinction between “Followers of Christ” and Christianity. “Followers of Christ” are not Christians. They only have one thing in common. The word Christ. “Followers of Christ” believe in John 3 vs 16 and Proverbs 3 vs 6. They obey the commandments and they feed the hungry, clad the naked and give drinks to the thirsty. They have one god and do not bow to or give respect to no other god, even at the stake of death. They keep the Sabbath holy, not Sunday. “Followers of Christ” detest and scorn Easter and Christmas as they see them as just relics of mystery Babylon and satanic cults. Similar to Christ, “followers of Christ” do not eat abominable meats such as crows, lobster and pork. Last but not least, according to the Bible, they will be just a measly few of them. I guess quality better than quantity? Hmmm.

On the other hand, Christians are idol worshipers under the veil of Christ’s name. Sadly, many do not know and few care but as Mark 7 vs 8 – 9 noted: “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men”. Also, in history, Christians waged wars for fun and conquest and have killed or annihilated millions of innocent souls who refused or are not Christians. Recall the bloody Crusades and the enslavement of Blacks in Jamaica and the Caribbean. They were done in the name and support of Christianity.  Last but not last . They are many Christians.  Quantity but no quality? Hmmm

Around 2500 years before Abraham and 5000 years before Christ, the people in Mesopotamia  (Sumerians) created gods in their own image and likeness. One such goddess was Easter.  She was hailed as the goddess of fertility and Queen of Heaven. Her cult spread but some people such as Abraham and the prophets were of the view that Jehovah God detested Easter and saw it as abominable.

After the death of Christ, in order to reduce the chances of civil uprising and to appease the pagan gods, Constantine, the emperor of Rome, pulled off a stunt, albeit diabolical.  He, with the signing of a document, made Easter a part of a “new” Christianity that was quintessentially a re-branded ” mystery religion and paganism.

Due to this fallacy, though painful, at Easter, many people try to connect with the creator of the heavens and earth but are instead connecting with the created beings in the heaven and the earth. Fortunately, although they can fool some of the people some of the times, they cannot fool all of the people all of the time. As such, it was noticed by curious prying souls that Easter is as old as civilization, and existed  thousands of years before Christ. Attempts to tag Christ’s death to a ancient mystery ritual called Good Friday , did not pass the test as 1 plus 1 = 2 but 1 and 1 = 11 (eleven).

Debunking the Friday death day fallacy, we can note that Christ was killed the day before the Sabbath but it was not a weekly Saturday Sabbath. He was killed the day before the High Sabbath that was held every year, at Nisan 15, by the Israelite in recognition of their escape or deliverance from Egypt. It is a date, not a day.

In short Christ was killed as a sacrificial lamb at the Passover Wednesday Nisan 14, to fulfill prophecy which claimed that the messiah Christ would be killed and raised from the dead in three days and three nights in order to wipe away the sins of the earth and provide a new “road to the creator, Jehovah).

As such, anything that contradicts prophesy and the Bible, should be approached with caution. Of course, it depends if you are a “Follower of Christ” or a Christian. Sometimes, fools do rush in where angels fear to tread.

The Vernal or Spring Equinox, which occurred, March 20, 2019, is easily the most important astronomical event of the year. It was a time of almost equal hours of sunlight and darkness in a day. It signaled a new beginning: a time of balance, change, rebirth, resurrection and fertility. It was a time to clean up the fields and sow new seeds after the cold barren winter. Indeed, it was used to mark the beginning of the astronomical year. (January 1 became the new year in 46 BC as decreed by Julius Caesar).

The spring equinox’s lures were so profound that it has been celebrated, incarnated, reincarnated  and deified with myths and legends abounding in almost all major civilizations, since antiquity. Indeed, it is the common thread in many major religions and cultures since Mesopotamia and was based on the position of the sun in the sky.

On a philosophical note, the spring equinox is a time of balance as there is an equal amount of sunlight (good) and darkness (bad). It is the beginning of a time when the light (good) conquers darkness (bad) for 6 months as the hours of daylight per day begin to lengthen until it reaches its longest on June 22, beginning of summer. It is a time to clear out the negatives and to start new projects and relationships. It’s a time to resurrect the positive energy that flows within but has been dormant.

Undoubtedly, the magic of spring has had such a cocaine hallucinating addictive type effect on mankind since creation that its deification and worship is almost surreptitious.

poster equinox 2In the Northern Hemisphere, the Spring Equinox can take place on March 19, 20 or 21. The Vernal or Spring equinox is also called the first day of spring“, with vernal meaning spring or “fresh” and equinox meaning equal nights. On March 20, the sun moves from south of the celestial equator to north of the equator. The hours of day lights, which have been getting longer since the winter solstice, Dec. 20 – 23, now equals the nights in length.

From March 20, until the summer solstice on June 20 – 21, the sunlight will gradually get longer because the sun will be higher in the sky, giving more hours of sunlight. (If you were noticing, night fall comes much earlier in December than say in June).

Also, if you live in North America you will understand and feel the magic that early man was experiencing when spring came.  It was life anew: the birds that flew south were returning; the trees were putting out leaves as if resurrected; the snow was gone and long lonely days of winter were gone. More hours of sun means warmer, I mean hotter, days. Warmer days mean more farming, more food supplies  and more fun and frolic. It was magic happening.

It begs the question, who are what was causing this magic and rebirth of life. Naturally, it would not only be important to know but also prudent to help encourage these entities to act favourable to man through worship and praise. Since the creator, to whom all praise is due,  is a spirit and cannot be seen, man created god (s) in his own image and likeness based on astrological designs. The spring equinox was one of the first deity created to give recognition to nature.

According to popular myths and legends , Inanna, was the first name for the Spring Equinox deity as coined by the ancient Sumerian who called her goddess of love, beauty, sex, desire, fertility, war, combat, justice, and political power. She was also known as the Queen of Heaven. Later on, Inanna was worshiped by the Babylonians and Assyrians under the name Ishtar or Ashtoreth or (goddess of fertility). In Greek Mythology she was called Aphrodite and her husband was Adonis or Dumuzid the Shepherd (later known as Tammuz). Ancient Egypt had her as Isis and her husband Osiris. German (Eostre) and Anglo Saxons (Easter) were similar. She was associated with the planet Venus, the morning star, the brightest object in the sky.

Some Easter legends and myths also include Nimrod of the tower of babel fame, and his wife, Semiramis. After his death, Nimrod became the sun god  and used his rays of light to impregnate his wife, now a widow.

Ash Wednesday semiramis.tammuz
Semiramis and Tammuz (Mother and child worship) became Ishtar, Queen of heaven” and goddess of fertility.

The child  was called Tammuz , son of the sun god and was responsible for bringing light into the world and to fight darkness.

After, Semiramis’s death, Nimrod sent her back to earth as the Spring fertility goddess, Ashtoreth or Easter. She emerged from a giant egg that landed in the Euphrates River in Mesopotamia on the Spring Equinox. To prove her divine authority, Semiramis, changed a bird into an egg laying rabbit. (Easter eggs and rabbits?)

The tragedy continued with Tammuz being killed by a boar (hog) at age 40. In order to bring him back to life, the idea of 40 days of abstinence from wantonness and red meat was instituted. One day for each year of his life.  His death celebrations (now Lent) are tied to Easter, with the beginning (called Ash Wednesday) being 40 days counting backward, from Easter, without the Sundays. Sundays are “Holy days”. Ham or pig was eaten at Easter in remembrance of Tammuz’s death.

To keep track of the beginning of spring in order to worship Easter was no easy feat despite the use of calendars. Today, we are used to a solar calendar with New Years Day falling on January 1; a “year” of 12 months (365 1/4 days) which was based on the earth’s rotation around the sun.

poster roman calendars mix
The 10 month:  Martius, Aprilis, Maius, Junius, Quintilis, Sextilis, September, October, November, and December. The last six names were taken from the Latin words for five, six, seven, eight, nine, and ten. Today, the 5th and 6th month in our calendar are renamed July and August in memory of Julius and Augustus Caesar.

However, the early Romans, had a lunar calendar with 10 months of 304 days, much less than the solar 365 1/4 days. The year begun in March. Romulus, the legendary first ruler of Rome, is accredited with this calendar in 753 B.C.E.

The Roman ruler Numa Pompilius , 713 BCE, was credited in adding January at the beginning and February at the end of the calendar to create the 12-month year  This made the Roman year 355 days long but still shorter than the solar 365 1/4 as it was still lunar.

Julius Caesar, corrected this in  46 B.C. by making that year  445 days long by imperial decree, bringing the calendar back in step with the seasons. He made the solar year (with the value of 365 days and 6 hours) the new basis for the calendar. The months were 30 or 31 days in length, and to take care of the 6 hours, every fourth year was made a 366-day year. Moreover, Caesar decreed the year began with the first of January, not with the traditional vernal equinox in late March.

However, despite this correction, the Julian calendar was still 111/2 minutes longer than the actual solar year, and after a number of centuries, even 111/2 minutes adds up.

The Church became concerned with this problem, as it was affecting the actual date of the spring equinox, and in the 1582 Pope Gregory XIII introduced a new calendar. The Gregorian calendar omitted 10 days for that year and established the new rule that only one of every four centennial years should be a leap year. In short, the new formula for calculating leap years required the year to be evenly divisible by 4; that the year cannot be evenly divided by 100, unless it is also evenly divisible by 400.

Let’s recall that a fact is a thing done or known to be true or existent; in reality. On the other hand a fiction is ” invented statement or narrative;  conventionally accepted false hood. Fallacy is ” mistaken belief; faulty reasoning or misleading argument. Some prevailing facts, fiction and fallacy surrounding the Spring Equinox and Easter are outlined below.

Spring equinox is an astronomical event that was once used to note the beginning of the year. This is a fact and it still does. It occurs between March 19 – 21, when the sun moves from south of the celestial equator to north of the equator and the day light equaled the dark night in length, or  “equinox” — Latin for “equal nights.”

The spring equinox was deified and worshiped. Fact. Since the spring equinox promised balance, the beginning of fertility and rebirth, it was made into  “goddess of fertility” and the “queen of heaven” since antiquity. Fact. She went under different names such as Inanna, Ishtar, Easter and Ashtoreth,  before Abraham, Moses, Jeremiah or even Jesus Christ was born..

Easter, as the deification of the spring equinox was calculated using the full moon after the spring equinox. Fact,  It is now held on the Sunday after the full moon after the spring equinox as decreed by Constantine at the Nicea council in AD 326. Since, it is dependent on the full moon after the spring equinox, it can be as early as March 22 or as late as April 25. Recall last year 2018, Easter was fittingly on April 1 or All’ Fools’ Day. This year it is April 21. It will be on April 12, 2020.

Easter was not originally in recognition of Christ’s death and resurrection. It is a fact that Easter is now being taught as the “death and resurrection of Christ, but in reality it is fiction with fallacy. It was not an original intention. The evidence is that Easter was before Christ and was only attached to Christ, 326 years after his death by Emperor Constantine at Council of Nicea. This convenient marriage of old Roman paganism, Easter, with Christ’s name was a political and civil decision to appease the followers of Christ and continue the old mystery religion of Rome.

Christ died on Friday and not Wednesday? Fiction and fallacy.  It is is myth and mistaken belief or faulty reasoning. Friday to Sunday is not three days and three nights.

The logic of Jonas:“For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” (Matthew 12:38-40).

portrait jesus death dayMost people tend to agree that by early Sunday morning Christ had risen from the dead. They tend to disagree about when he was killed. Counting backward, from his resurrection, Sunday,  logically, three days and three nights would be Wednesday.

What, wasn’t Christ crucified on a Friday? Let us check. The fact is the bible said he was killed the day before the Sabbath. We normally assume that the day before the sabbath is Friday. Most times this is true but did you notice that there were two Sabbaths mentioned in the week when Christ was crucified. A High Sabbath and the Saturday Sabbath. Well, it is the key to unlocking the day of death of Christ.

According to John 19:31, “the Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away”

According to Leviticus 23, there are seven (7) High Sabbaths, and one is celebrated annually on Nisan 14 which is roughly March/April. These High Sabbaths and the regular Saturday Sabbath are different. The High Sabbath in March/April can fall on any day of the week. it is always Nisan 14. It is celebrated after the Passover in remembrance of the Israelite’s  exodus from Egypt, not the killing of Christ.

You may recall, Christ rode into town on an ass on “palm” Sunday for the upcoming Passover, spent Monday in Jerusalem, the next day Tuesday; after he had the Passover dinner with his disciples, he was arrested  in the garden of Gethsemane in the night. He was tried and killed the next day Wednesday by 3 pm, which was the preparation day for the High Sabbath, the following day, Thursday. The High Sabbath, Thursday came and went.

On Friday, the day after the High Sabbath, the women bought and prepared spices for Christ’s body but could not get it done on time as they had to prepare for the upcoming Saturday Sabbath, which began Friday evening. They decided that they would wait until Sunday, after the Saturday Sabbath, to put the spice on Christ, but when they had reached his tomb early Sunday morning he was already risen as they were told by an angel.

So in practice, every year, the week with Nisan 14 has two Sabbaths unless Nisan 14 also falls on the Saturday. So in actuality, Christ was killed the day before the High Sabbath, not the day before the Saturday Sabbath.

Still a bit fuzzy? Get your Bible and remember that in Christ’s time, a day begun at sun set or in the evening. Not at midnight as we now do. So Saturday actually begun Friday evening and ended Saturday evening with Sunday beginning Saturday evening and finishing Sunday evening.

DAY/TIME EVENTS Days/night of death
“Palm”  Sunday
  • Christ rode into Jerusalem town on an ass) Matthew 21:1-16
  • Spent his time preaching in the temple
  • Spoke parables such as the wicked tenants,
  • Discussed his views on the right to pay taxes
  • Declared that the greatest commandment is that we should love the Lord thy god with all our heart, soul and mind.
  • Cursed the Pharisees.
  • Upon leaving the temple he told the parable of the 10 virgins.
  • Judas went to the authorities. Matthew 21:23-27
  • Back to Jerusalem Matthew 26:17-19
  • Passover meal in the evening,
  • Exposed Judas.
  • After the meal they went to the garden of Gethsemane
  • arrested and brought before the Jews later in the night. Matthew 26:47-56
  • Tried and whipped early morning, 9 am Matthew 27:2-50
  • Crucified at midday
  • Christ dead at 3 pm
  • removed from the cross, wrapped in linen and placed in a tomb before 6 pm.
  • No time to prepare his body for burial as they had to prepare for the High Annual Sabbath  on Thursday, in a few hours. John 19 vs 31
  • Annual High Sabbath (Feast of unleavened bread) begun at 6 pm.
First night (6 pm – 6 am)
  • Christ is already dead. Luke 23:43-46
  • Annual High Sabbath (Feast of unleavened bread) continued.
  • High Sabbath ends Thursday evening
  • Thursday evening at sunset. Christ still dead.
First day (6 am to 6 pm)

Second night (6 pm – 6 am)

“Good” Friday
  • Friday sunrise Christ is already dead
  • After the end of the High sabbath Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, that they might come and anoint the dead. Mark 16:1-2
  • Spices which were bought were prepared in the day on Friday but they had to stop as the evening, Saturday Sabbath, was approaching. They planned to come back first thing Sunday morning, after the Saturday Sabbath to anoint the body.
  • The women rested on the Saturday Sabbath day (starting from Friday evening). Luke 23:55 – 24:1
Second day (6 am to 6 pm)

Third night (6 pm – 6 am)

  • Christ is still dead in the morning
  • Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James continue resting during the Saturday Sabbath until it ended on  Saturday evening.
  • Christ risen Saturday evening before sunset or Sunday.
Third day

(6 am to 6 pm)

  • Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James visit Jesus tomb on the Sunday, at dawn first day of the week. Matthew 28:1-10
  • Christ already risen from Saturday evening
Fourth day

Hence, we can count three days and nights backwards from Sunday to Wednesday, and we can count forward, three days and three nights if we go forward from being killed the day after Passover dinner to his resurrection before end of day Saturday or beginning of Sunday.

Evidence of Easter in the Bible

The spring equinox (Easter) is mentioned multiple times in the Old Testament and once in the New Testament indicating its existence before and during the time of Christ.

bible2 Kings 23:13 which Solomon the king of Israel had builded for  Ashtoreth   the abomination of the Zidonians,

1 Kings 11:5-6. He followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molech the detestable god of the Ammonites.

1 Kings 11:33. I will do this (split the nation) because they have forsaken me and

worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians…., ,

So the people of Israel removed the Baals and images of Ashtoreth. They served only Yahuwah.  (1 Samuel 7:3,4)

The women were engaged in kneading dough and baking cakes of bread for the “Queen of Heaven” (Jeremiah 7:18). Ezek 8:14 behold, there sat women weeping for Tammuz. (Lent)

Acts 12: 4 state that And when he (Herod) had apprehended him (Peter), he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.

The deification of the spring equinox as the goddess of fertility has been a natural development due to astronomical events.  The spring equinox is simply nature doing its work of rebirth, balance and fertility. However, man’s attempt to control his destiny, has led to the deification of the beginning of spring as Ishatr, goddess of fertility or queen of heaven. Today, Christianity has embraced Easter as the death and resurrection of Christ. Although this might seem naive if not dubious, it has accomplished what Constantine, Emperor of Rome intended and decreed at the council of Nicea AD 326: the marrying of Christ’s name with pagan Easter will allow for Christianity to be legalized, the gods continuing being happy and the republic of Rome flourish.

We fail exams because we attempted the exam and did not get the required grades necessary to pass. Really now? Yeah that is it. Seriously, were you expecting a more articulated discussion with scholarly or scientific explanations? Were you expecting a well categorized if not exhaustive list of non student and student factors that could be contributing to failing exams?

poster causes of failureHonestly, I had those in mind and more but after all is said and done, we fail because we did not pass. We failed to pass.

Naturally, the causes for failing is another matter and the reasons are as diverse as individuals are different or even as common as individuals are similar. However, most reasons fall within not turning up at the exam, mentally and physically ready,  and turning up for the wrong exam. Whichever, we fail to pass and there are consequences.

Normally, achieving any goal, is a success and success is good. In short, failing is good if you were planning to fail but who plans to fail? Well, have you ever failed an exam? Did you plan to fail or it was simply “out of luck” happening to you?

Well, lots of time we foolhardily plan to fail and when we are successful and get the failing grade, we are surprised, disappointed and even get depressed. Yet our actions can increase the chances of our failing and action speaks louder than words.

poster planning to fail

For example, when we are approaching exams and we are not prepared and ready, we are actually planning to fail.  If we can’t define the name of the subject that we  are studying, or not having the syllabus for the exam and following it, then we are planning to fail. Not going to classes nor getting the course material and procrastinating studying for exams, we are planning to fail. Not being able to understand what we know and being able to relate it to the examiner, we are planning to fail. Not liking a subject and yet neglecting it while hoping for the best with our fingers crossed, then we are planning to fail.

In short anything we do that does not help to enhance our chances of passing the exam, is planning to fail and it is not good, unless failing is our goal. Bear in mind, if we fail to plan, we are planning to fail.

poster bill gates failingOf course, at times, failing an exam might put us into a better position. For example, failing an exam might get us the chance to do a resit and get higher grades. Losing a battle (failing an exam) in order to win the war.

On a philosophical note, failing is good when it reshaped people’s life for the better. Failing can create a sense of pride and kindle an ardent desire to succeed against the odds. A kind of failing being “a blessing in disguise”. Failing in one area might lead us to our success or calling in another area.

Also, failing an exam might be good as some people enjoy failing. For these people, failing is success since failing gives them gratification.

Nevertheless, failing can be terrible as it might affect our self confidence and sense of worth. Failing is also a waste of time and cost in terms of money, resources, sweat and tears. Some times we only have one try at an exam and failing is not an option. It’s now or never. No second chance so our career goals would get dashed; we would be denied job advancement and screened out from becoming a part of our aspiration group.

So whether failing an exam is good or bad can be relative but one thing is sure: exams exist.

Exams have been considered as useful tools to measure students’ knowledge, skill, and ability. Exams  also serve as a way to allocate certificates of merit; determine qualification for upgrading and standardized entry requirement for college and professional groups. A “kind of screening mechanism to separate the Crème de la crème from the ordinary”.

poster einstein on learning

However, the reliance on exams as a measurement tool can be troublesome. Empirical evidence has shown that students may have learnt and teachers may have taught and yet students still perform poorly on an exam.

Also,  should a single grade on an exam determine our “success”? In fact, many educators are now suggesting that alternatives to final exams, such as course work grades, are better indicators of students’ performance as students earn grades based upon their performance on a wider range of assessments methods and types and over time.

On the darker side, exams can be rigged, test papers compromised, and even used for personal gains by teachers and administrators. The recent Stanford University scandal surrounding entry to universities is a good example.

Yet, despite the drawbacks of exams, necessary evil or not, they have been around for centuries and will continue to be. As such, it’s important that when we are faced with exam situations , we are ready to tackle them with confidence and fun.

As mentioned above, there are many reasons or causes for failing exams. One way to understand the issue is to consider our failing of exams as the effects or symptoms of underlying causes or problems that existed leading up to the exam or even during the exam.

fishbone diagram jpeg
Ishikawa or Fishbone model  representing causes for low performance on exams. To see a clearer image click here.   Ishikawa or Fishbone diagram- Exam Performance – WordFoodMusic .

To stop failing exams we need to pay attention to these causes. It is not the failing of the exam that is the problem, it is the causes that are the problem.

These causes though common and varied are summarized using the Ishikawa or Fishbone Diagram as above. This Cause and Effect model classified the major causes for exam failure as: 1. the students’ learning, level of preparedness, resources, and home environment; 2. the teachers’ qualities and teaching methods; 3.  the school’s systems and structures;   4. the type of exam, conditions and time of day; 5. Family and friends support and 6. the government’s commitment to education.

As can be seen, unfortunately, most of the fposter 4-study-motivation-hacksactors that affect exam performance are out side our control as students. Accordingly, students are primarily responsible for their success on exams as the odds are stacked up against them. The onus is on us to get high grades.

To pass an exam, be sure to prepare as if 100% is the passing grade. As such, aim for the ultimate. Know your strengths and weaknesses then accentuate your strengths and eliminate your weaknesses. Help yourself  by identifying the causes that could affect your chances at success in exams.  Check to see if these factors are out of your control and what you can do about them in order to mitigate their negative impact. Honest answers are needed. To thyself be true.

poster hard work beats

Basically, passing exams are the opposite of failing exams. Do plan to pass. Only do things that will improve your chances of passing. Treat your study time or the entire semester as an Exam prison sentence. Your “free”time is restricted by studying and you are allowed lesser privileges. The bright side is after the exam you will have time to do other types of fun and frolic. Wink. Wink.  W

Here are a few hints, tips and techniques that you could consider. They worked well for me.

  1.  TURN UP FOR THE EXAM. Be ready and be on time. Turn up in body and mind.
  2. HAVE FUN WHILE STUDYING. If you enjoy what you are doing, it is less work and more fun. Learn even while you are at fun with friends, spouse and family.  Get them involved.
  3. AIR. (ATTENTION. INTEREST. RESPECT).  Get and give lots of AIR. The more Attention is given, the more things open up. Put a little Interest with Attention and you might be surprised to see how things that were as clear as mud, quickly become as clear as crystal. Seal it up with Respect which is the energy that guides Attention and Interest. Give and get respect.
  4. MAKE YOUR PRIORITY YOUR PREROGATIVE AND YOUR PREROGATIVE YOUR PRIORITY. There are only 24 hours in the day and you should ensure that your exam is your priority and prerogative. Use up as much of the day doing them. Recall you are in Exam prison.
  5. ALWAYS READ ONE OR TWO CHAPTERS AHEAD OF YOUR TUTOR. When you read ahead of your teacher the material will be as clear as mud to you. That’s okay for it to be a muddle then. When you are in class and the teacher begins that topic it will become as clear as Pepsi or Coke. When you reread it again at home it will be as clear as cream soda.
  6. WORRY BEFORE THE TIME TO WORRY. There are three times to worry. Before the exam, during the exam and after the exam. The best time to worry is before the exams. If you worry before the exams, then during the exams or after the exams you won’t worry because you had already worried yourself.
  7. PROPER PREPARATION PREVENTS POOR PERFORMANCE. “Dance a yard before you dance abroad”. This cannot be over stated. Get all the study material available from the examination body and teachers. Study them smartly. Swot the facts and learn the principles. Try and summarize a chapter of say 20 pages on a topic to down to a page or two of notes in your own words. Learn the moves now, develop style later.poster no secret to success
  8. TO FULLY UNDERSTAND IT, YOU NEED TO SEE IT WORKING. Theory is good but seeing it work in practice is priceless. Practice. Practice. practice. Nothing beats practice and being ready. Study, study and then study again.
  9. THE MORE OF YOUR SENSES YOU USE WHEN STUDYING, THE MORE YOU LEARN. If you hear, say,  write, see and even taste the topics you are doing, you will learn more. So after hearing your lecturer talk about an exam topic, you should go read it and write down notes on the topic, and then tell your friend about it so the brain record it better. Next, go watch a YouTube video on the topic for further understanding. Reinforcement and repetition are learning’s best friends.
  10. GIGO. Garbage In Garbage Out. This computer term is applicable. In fact, what you put in is what you get out. Do a substantial amount of work and prepare for the exam as if it is two weeks earlier. Recall Murphy’s Law: if something can go wrong, it normally goes wrong.
  11. ANY TOPIC OR SUBJECT YOU DON’T LIKE, LOVE IT MORE THAN THE REST. If you don’t like a particular topic on the exam, pay more attention to that topic. Go back to number 2. Give more AIR to weak or disliked topics .
  12. DO NOT PROMISE YOUR BRAIN TO SPEND AN ENTIRE WEEKEND STUDYING. JUST DO IT. Normally the ideal is not the real and something is going to prevent you from doing it. . Mark you, it’s a noble idea but it rarely works. The brain seems to find ways out of it and the following week you and your brain are at malice or in remorse. Instead of promising to do do it, on the weekend, just do daily study of even an hour, and on weekends you increase.
  13. STUDY NOW AND PRACTICE WEEKEND. If you study in little pockets of a 1/2 hr or a hour or two over a week, the brain works with you. It’s better to nibble away at a cake in small slices rather than try to swallow chunks of it at once.
  14. USE UP THE ART OF PATIENCE. Find something to do while you wait. If your beauty parlour appointment is delayed by a hour, use the time to study ONE topic on the exam instead of fuming mad at the hair dresser.
  15. SIX HONEST SERVING WO(MEN). In college we learnt the popular Rudyard Kipling rhyme: “I have 6 honest serving women, who taught me All I knew. There names are what, where when, how, why and who. You should know them all for every topic on the exam.poster planning to fail
  16. EXAM TECHNIQUES. It is important that you relax the week before exams and do a dress rehearsal. Always KNOW  key verbs such as list, explain, outline, discuss, pros and cons etc. If the exam ask to list or state, don’t waste time discussing and explaining. That is time wasting. Also, if the exam ask you to discuss please don’t just list or state. That is wasting grades.
  17. BE OBEDIENT. Do exactly as the exam paper instructed. Remember,  you now need to show the examiner that you know, in the time allowed which is the length of the exam.
  18. TURN UP FOR THE EXAM. A bit basic, but do make  sure you are at the right exam, at the right time and right place, physically and mentally.

To fail or not to fail, at times, is a personal decision. An exam requires, according to Peter Tosh, our “full-icipation instead of “part-icipation”. We should decide if we are up to the task. Simply put, failing an exam can be out of our league if  we give it our full attention, interest and respect (AIR and are prepared physically and mentally for it.

One way to be prepared is to know what causes exam failures. As seen some of these causes include our selves as students; our teachers; the school; our friends and family; and the type of exam. Unfortunately, most of the factors affecting our success at exams are outside of our control but we can influence our own destiny. As such we need to identify our strengths and weakness and take steps to accentuate the strengths and eliminate the weaknesses. Not over stressing it, but there is no short cut to high grades on exams: it is hard work. We need to put in if we want to get out.   The most painful part of failing exams, apart from the time and cost, is the fact that most times when we fail, we are the ones who had foolhardily planned to fail. Suffice to say turning up at the exam with proper preparation can ensure exam success and boot out exam failure.

Oh, by the way, most importantly, have fun.

Whenever you visit supermarkets, gas stations, pharmacies, mom and pop shop and basically anywhere drinks are sold there is a high chance you are being sold a bottle of mixed drink consisting mainly of water as 100% juice. You might be saying, No way, Not I.

Just for the fun of it, the next time you go to your favourite supermarket or retail shop take a walk down the drinks aisle and look out for any bottle that has 100% Juice written on it.  How many say 100% Juice are simply that? Juice.

Shouldn’t be a difficult exercise as these bottles are prominently displayed with the 100% juice conspicuously inviting you to “buy me, I am juice and good for you. I am a bit expensive but juice is expensive.”

Here is a picture I took of three such brands displaying their 100% Juice. There are many more brands that do this practice which some how is common and so wide spread we wonder if they are being regulated.

Of course. The Sales of Goods Act (1979), Fair Trade Commission, The Jamaica Bureau of Standards and the Consumer Affair Commission were created to protect consumers from companies that would dare to imagine much less sell mixed drinks as 100% juice. So we are protected? Right?  Wrong?

motts 100% 2 motts label

Let’s check one of these bottles and see. As noticed, clearly written at the front: “Mott’s 100% Apple Juice. What does this mean to you? The bottle of liquid is juice and nothing but juice?

Now let’s check the ingredients which is usually at the back of the bottle and facing the back of the shelf. The ingredients are listed as water, apple juice concentrate and ascorbic acid (vitamin c). Interesting but what is the logic or the intent?

I should also mention that I have seen some Mott’s 100% Juice doing just that. Being just Apple juice. So one wonders even more. Is seeing believing?

In law classes we learnt a Latin term called “Caveat Emptor” which meant “Let the buyer beware”. Simply, consumers are expected to think that businesses are ripped off artists and con men and they (consumers) should deal with businesses accordingly and with great reservations. It was quite common centuries ago. Is it happening now?

Centuries ago, in the Chandelor v Lopus (1603) famous case in the common law of England, a man paid £100 for what he thought was a bezoar stone. This is a stone that forms in animals’ intestinal systems, and was believed to have magical healing properties. The seller said it was a bezoar stone, which turned out to be false. The buyer sued for the return of the £100 purchase price. Should he had got back his money?

The Court held the buyer had no right to his money back, saying “the bare affirmation that it was a bezoar stone, without warranting it to be so, is no cause of action.” The majority of the judges held that the buyer was required to show either that the seller knew the stone was not a bezoar, in which case the seller was liable for deceit, or that the seller had warranted (contractually guaranteed) that the stone was a bezoar, in which case the seller would be liable for breach of warranty. Since the seller in this case was not alleged to have done either of these things, the buyer’s claim failed.

This sad case of sadness continued for centuries but in the late 1970s the concept of caveat emptor  was giving way to caveat venditor (let the seller beware). The Sales of Goods Act (1979) and other legislation saw a new paradigm shift with the Courts basically warning sellers that, unless they expressly disclaim any responsibility, they will be held liable if the sold items are found defective or vary from the specifications.

Figures dont lie mark twain

Yes. It has become such a sport to “exploit” people that many individuals and organizations delve into the art and science of persuading and confusing consumers. It is fun for some to get much from none.

At times, being hoodwinked by the supermarket, government and  big corporations can be as painful as being ripped off by con men, gun men and three card men down town.

Not saying Mott’s is telling lies. False is different from misleading.  It promotes and sells a mixture of water, apple concentrate and ascorbic acid as 100% Apple Juice. How ever, Mott’s did say CONTAIN 100% juice, not that the entire bottle is 100% apple juice. Figures don’t lie, but liars can figure.

Let’s look at a 16 ounce bottle of drinks. If Mott’s pours four (4) ounces of 100% apple juice in the bottle along with 12 ounces of water, what does one call the entire mixture of apple juice and water? Apple Juice? Apple Drinks? Watery Apple Juice? Maybe it depends. Tricks in trade? Mischievous in business?

Another term we learnt in Business law is : “res ipsa loquitor’ – the thing speaks for itself. Fortunately, most companies try to tell us what they are about but they do so using very fine print compared with the large print size for their “puffery”.

In summary, deception and fraud aside, the Bureau of Standards provides that manufacturers should list the ingredients for a product in descending order with the ingredient that is the most in terms of volume, weight and size being listed first.

Simply put, put the most first.  If water is listed first it means that water is the majority of the content. If apple juice is listed first it means that apple juice is the majority of the content. By extension, if apple juice alone is listed, it means ALL of the content is a 100% juice.

Fooling some people some of times can make you Guilty all the time.

Naked juice label
As a result of the law suit, Naked had to drop the ALL NATURAL claim. They still keep the 100% juice as there is no water in their product, unlike Mott’s.

In 2011, Naked Juice was forced to retract their claim that their juice was “100% fruit” and “all natural.” The juice company, owned by Pepsi, was actually including ascorbic acid and synthetic sources of fiber in their beverages — proving that “all natural” and #100%  can be fairly meaningless buzzwords.   The complaint points out that the “front-of-package promises that the product is ‘ALL NATURAL’ and ‘100% JUICE.’

It was held by the Court that a reasonable consumer would not assume that defendants were being deceptive and would not know to read the very-fine-print ingredient label.

PepsiCo Inc. agreed to settle for a $9 million lawsuit where each customer could receive up to US$75 in accordance to the company’s false, misleading and deceptive advertisements. Other companies, such as Kashi and General Mills Inc. faced identical disputes for using GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, while claiming to be #100percent natural and containing no artificial ingredients.

It begs a possible question: If Pepsi was  found guilty, can companies such as Mott’s and RubyKist be challenged?

Einstein dangerious worldAt times, we find our selves in less than desirable relationships on many levels. How we handle them depends on many factors.  Sometimes we are faced with a dilemma.

Then again, the options are not really many but they are far reaching as it can impact ones behaviour when faced with similar situations. We can continue with the relationship having the comfort in knowing that we know the other party is lying. We can stop the relationship knowing that where honesty, integrity and trust are lost , it is usually for ever.

Interestingly, I was listening to some musical tracks done by my daughter, Aneil, while writing this blog.  Couldn’t resist sharing one of them with you.  POISON. Not sure why I thought it would be a fitting song to conclude this section with but here goes: POISON: the #3 track on Aneil’s Extended Play was released 2018. Vs. 1
Your love is poison
But oh baby I want it
And oh baby I’m ‘on it’ (ye ey ey ey ey)
Ya take my mind on a roadtrip
My mind can’t behold it
All the tantalizing things that you say.
You do for me what sanity won’t
And that is to be your only girl
In reality it’s so wrong
Because you are already ‘owned’
Your love’s like that drug; can’t get enough

Vs. 2
What to do about us
Can’t believe it got to this
Each day that passes, I need you more
Still I wait for the day, you’ll tell me it’s not okay.
I’ll cry
You may
Then I’ll ask why.
You and I have to cool it
Barriers broke down, leaving us bare
My love for you is heightened
My chest tightens at the sight of you
Your love’s like that song; can’t get enough
Put you on replay, I can’t get enough.”
